Psychosomatische Bedeutung

HOMEOPATHY IN DIFFERENT STAGES OF PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH

Pregnancy is a very important milestone in a woman’s life where she undergoes various physiological and psychological changes. Since pregnancy can be stressful to a woman’s body, the health of the woman significantly affects the health of the fetus. Homeopathic medicines will help improve the health of the mother as well as the fetus thereby assuring a more positive pregnancy experience. Homeopathic medicines are gentle, safe, non-toxic, FDA approved and effective in treating various common problems of pregnancy and childbirth. This being a very comprehensive topic I will segregate it between the July and August articles. In this article I will talk about some common ailments during the pregnancy trimesters and their response to Homeopathic medicine.

Conventional medicine generally suppresses symptoms rather than treating the underlying cause, and when taken during pregnancy does have a chance of various side effects on the fetus. Since Homeopathy works with the body’s natural defense system, Homeopathic medicines increase the probability of a healthy child. Homeopathy balances the whole system thus allowing the body to heal itself. Each individual case can be assessed and individualized to treat specific symptoms and weaknesses. Some of the common ailments during pregnancy and labor that can be treated by using Homeopathic remedies are given below. These remedies are just a few of the commonly used Homeopathic remedies and are mentioned only to create awareness about the effectiveness of Homeopathic medicines in Pregnancy. It is not advisable to resort to self-medication for any health condition.

Fatigue: During pregnancy the body has lots of adjustments to make, metabolism steps up in order to support the developing baby as well as your own body, causing fatigue and feeling a need to sleep more than usual. During initial weeks after conception, your body begins to produce more blood to carry nutrients to the fetus. Your heart increases its work to accommodate this increased blood flow. The hormone progesterone which is required in high levels during pregnancy has a sedating effect. Also any pains, anemia, depression, anxiety or insomnia may cause fatigue. The combination of these changes contributes to the fatigue you may feel.

Tips:

•             Take adequate rest.

•             Eat a balanced diet. The fatigue in early pregnancy can be worse if you’re not getting enough iron or protein.

•             Increase your level of exercise by walking and swimming regularly.

•             Massage on a regular basis can also help in stimulating your energy flow.

Homeopathic remedies: Take Ferrum Phos 12X three times daily till you need it.

Morning Sickness: The most common illness is morning sickness which is caused by an increase in hormone levels during the early months of pregnancy. It can range from mild nausea to constant vomiting requiring hospitalization. This may be caused due to low blood sugar esp. when you have not eaten for some time, low blood pressure, hormonal changes, emotional stress, Vitamin B6 and iron deficiency, an excess of refined, spicy, or greasy foods, and pressure on the stomach from the growing uterus in the last few weeks of pregnancy. It can be more severe in a first pregnancy, in women carrying multiple fetuses or in women with other medical conditions.

Tips:

•             Eating carbohydrate-rich snacks between meals can help.

•             A protein-rich snack eaten half an hour before bedtime will ensure that your blood sugar level doesn’t fall too low during the night.

•             Increase iron-rich foods in your diet, such as beef, eggs, fruits and green leafy vegetables.

•             Drink lots of fluids, and eat smaller meals more frequently.

•             Avoid smells which trigger nausea.

•             Consider possible emotional causes and discuss your feelings with someone understanding.

Homeopathic remedies: Ipecac 30C three times daily for five days, stopping earlier if symptoms start to improve.

Mood Swings: Hormonal changes and mixed feelings about your forthcoming parenthood can have a depressant effect on your nervous system, causing mood changes, unexplained crying and anxiety. These symptoms can last throughout the pregnancy.

Tips: Relaxing exercises and minimizing stress.

Homeopathic remedies: Pulsatilla 12C for emotional women who are weepy for no reason, indecisive, with frequent changes in mood. Sepia 12C for feelings of dissatisfaction or indifferent behavior towards own family.

Nasal Stuffiness / Colds: This is due to the hormonal effects on the nasal passages, stress and fatigue. It results from an increase in fluid in the mucous membrane linings, which causes swelling and a blockage of the sinuses. If the blocked sinuses become infected, sinusitis may develop causing headaches, pain at the base of the nose and around the eyes, which worsens if the head is lowered.

Tips:

•             Drink plenty of fluids.

•             Add two drops of eucalyptus, lavender, lemon and tea tree oils to a bowl of boiling water. Inhale for 10 minutes 3 times a day.

•             Apply warm compresses to the front and sides of the face and around your eyes, nose and temples.

•             Relaxation exercises, minimizing stress, eating well and getting enough rest are important.

Homeopathic remedies: Take Silica 12C or Kali Bichromicum 12C three times daily for up to a week, stopping when symptoms start to improve.

Dizziness / Faintness: Dizziness during pregnancy can result from circulatory changes, stress, fatigue and hunger. During pregnancy the uterus has a great demand for blood supply which reduces the blood supply to other parts of the body. Warm weather, a warm bath, sudden change of position, standing for too long or too quickly can cause blood pooling in the legs or feet which leads to lack of blood supply to the brain that becomes temporarily short of oxygen leading to dizziness and fainting. A more serious but rare cause may be an ectopic pregnancy, especially if dizziness is severe and occurs with abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding.

Tips:

•             Don’t stand for too long, while standing practice contracting and relaxing your leg and buttock muscles to help the blood return to your head.

•             While resting, lie on your sides rather than your back.

•             Try to keep cool during hot weather and avoid getting up suddenly.

•             If you experience dizziness, sit with your head between your knees or lie down with your feet elevated and head lower than your body.

•             Maintain your blood sugar level by munching occasionally on snacks.

Homeopathic remedies: Ferrum Phos 30C when you feel dizzy, and repeat when needed.

Heartburn: Progesterone relaxes the valve between the oesophagus and the stomach, making it easier for stomach acid to flow into the oesophagus, irritating the oesophagus and causing a burning sensation in the chest. Pressure on the stomach from the growing uterus may also cause stomach acid to flow upwards. Heartburn will be worse after meals, when lying down, straining or coughing.

Tips:

•             Keep your meals small and frequent. Finish your evening meal at least two hours before going to bed.

•             Eat slowly, chewing your food well.

•             Avoid lying down immediately after eating.

•             Avoid spicy, greasy, sugary, acidic or other foods that disagree with you and try not to drink with your meals as this dilutes the digestive juices.

•             Eating fennel seeds after meals will aid digestion.

•             Avoid stimulants such as tea and coffee.

•             Try alkaline foods like yoghurt or milk to ease burning, or mildly acidic foods like orange, pineapple or tomato juice.

Homeopathic remedies: Arsenicum Album 12C or Carbo Veg 12C three times daily or whenever needed.

Constipation: Constipation is common during and after pregnancy, when progesterone relaxes the muscles in the intestines causing food to move slowly through your digestive tract. As a result, more water than usual is absorbed making your stool hard and dry. Insufficient dietary fiber, synthetic iron supplements, commonly prescribed in pregnancy, can also cause constipation.

Tips:

•             Drink plenty of water, and eat plenty of fiber, fruits and vegetables.

•             When you feel the urge to go to the toilet, respond immediately.

•             Breathe deeply, relax and avoid straining when emptying your bowels.

•             Prune juice, dried prunes or figs soaked in water overnight can help move bowels easily.

•             Exercise regularly.

Homeopathic remedy: Take Nux vomica 6X three times daily for up to a week.

Cramping: Low levels of calcium, circulatory changes and the growing foetus pushing against the walls of your uterus, causes the uterus to continuously contract. This causes cramps which are most common in the third trimester of pregnancy and are usually experienced as sharp aching pains in the thighs, calves or feet. Pressure from your uterus on the veins returning blood from your legs may cause leg cramps, especially at night. A pulling or stabbing pain in your groin or a sharp cramp down your side, especially after suddenly moving or reaching for something, may occur when you stretch your long ligament, one of several ligaments supporting the uterus.

Tips:

•             Massage the area firmly and stretch the muscle by extending your heel and bringing your toes toward you.

•             Sleep with feet slightly elevated by placing a pillow under the feet.

•             Exercise regularly and make sure your diet contains adequate calcium and magnesium.

Homeopathic remedy: Dissolve four tablets of Magnesia Phosphorica 6X in a tsp. of warm water and take it whenever you experience cramps.

Breathlessness: Breathlessness is a result of extra oxygen demands for the increased metabolic rate. It also occurs because the growing uterus changes the shape of the thorax and makes breathing harder. Breathlessness is more likely to occur in women who are expecting large babies or twins, are overweight, unfit, anemic or have a deficient diet.

Tips:

•             Eat a healthy balanced diet.

•             Try taking deep breaths and maintain a good posture so your lungs have room to expand.

•             Keep your head elevated while sleeping.

•             Sleeping on your left side will relieve pressure on major blood vessels that supply oxygen and nutrients to the fetus.

•             Swimming is an excellent exercise that builds up your stamina.

Homeopathic remedies: Antimonium Tart 12C single dose as and when needed.

Backache: Low back pain extending down the legs is a common complaint during pregnancy especially in the last trimester, since this is the area of the body most stressed by the additional weight that you are carrying. During pregnancy the high levels of progesterone result in the stretching and softening of ligaments in the pelvic area and the spine in preparation for birth which puts extra strain on the back and hips causing backache.

Tips:

•             Massage with strengthening exercises for your back can help relieve your ache.

•             Avoid wearing high heels, sleeping on an overly soft mattress and lifting heavy weights.

•             Try to maintain a good posture taking care not to arch your back, walk and stand with your feet parallel.

Homeopathic remedies: Arnica 30C or Rhus Tox 12C three times a day, or when needed.

By treating the mother during pregnancy and making her as healthy as she can be Homeopathic medicines will assist her to go through childbirth safely and ecstatically and can also ensure the health of the baby.

Last month I had discussed a few pregnancy ailments that can be treated with safe and natural Homeopathic medicines. The ailments that we already discussed are fatigue, morning sickness, mood swings, nasal stuffiness and colds, dizziness and faintness, heartburn, constipation, cramping, breathlessness and backache. Now I will further discuss some more pregnancy ailments and childbirth that can be made easy with the help of Homeopathic medicines. The remedies given below with the specific health conditions are just a few of the commonly used Homeopathic remedies and are mentioned only to create awareness about the effectiveness of Homeopathic medicines in Pregnancy and childbirth. It is not advisable to resort to self-medication for any health issues.

Urinary tract infection: UTI’s are common during pregnancy because of changes in the urinary tract. The uterus sits directly on top of the bladder. As the uterus grows, its increased weight can block the drainage of urine from the bladder, causing an infection. The physiologic increase in plasma volume during pregnancy decreases urine concentration. Up to 70 percent of pregnant women develop glycosuria, which encourages bacterial growth in the urine. Increase in urinary progestins and estrogens may lead to a decreased ability of the lower urinary tract to resist invading bacteria. These factors may contribute to the development of UTIs during pregnancy. Increased urinary frequency and sexual intercourse can also trigger a UTI.

Tips:

•             Empty your bladder immediately after having sex.

•             Avoid intercourse while you are being treated for an UTI.

•             Several glasses of cranberry juice can be helpful in preventing UTI.

•             Kegel exercises can help control bladder incontinence.

Homeopathic remedies: Increased frequency of urine with burning pain Cantharis 12C or Sarsaparilla 12C three times a day for 2-3 days will be very helpful.

Insomnia: Insomina or disturbed sleep is common during pregnancy and can start at any time from conception onwards. Its may be due to anxiety, depression, indigestion, over stimulation, discomfort, pain, the need to urinate more often at night, with a cycle of sleeplessness and worry causing its recurrence.

Tips:

•             Relaxation, massages, a warm bath, reading, watching television or anything you find relaxing may help.

•             Avoid stimulants such as tea and coffee.

•             A calcium-rich drink, such as warm milk before bedtime will help you sleep.

•             Make sure your room is well ventilated and your bed comfortable. Use extra pillows to make yourself comfortable if necessary.

•             Add two or three drops of lavender essential oil to a base oil and use it with a massage before bed. Or try a hot footbath containing lavender oil to encourage energy to drain from the head so that sleep comes easier.

Homeopathic remedies: Avena sativa 12C or Passiflora 12C before going to bed and another if you wake up during the night.

Hypertension: The placenta produces chemicals called vasoconstrictors, which can cause the blood vessels to constrict causing High blood pressure. High blood pressure can be mild with few symptoms, or severe with many symptoms such as headache, blurred vision, vomiting, and water retention causing swelling of feet, hands and ankles. It is most common in women over thirty-five or having a multiple pregnancy. It may be a sign of pregnancy toxemia where there is excess protein in the urine with fluid retention and may need immediate attention.

Tips:

•             Complete bed rest or hospitalization.

•             Salt restricted diet.

•             Drink plenty of fluids.

Homeopathic remedies: Apis Mel 12C every 2 hourly or a constitutional remedy in a more complicated case.

Thrush: The main cause of thrush is vaginal acidity, after an antibiotic course, poor diet, stress, anemia, fatigue, high blood sugar levels or through sexual contact. The reason why antibiotics make us more susceptible to thrush is that they not only kill the bad bacteria, but the good bacteria too. Also with the anus and vagina so close together, it is easy for the bacteria from the bowel to make it’s way to the vagina. Symptoms of vaginal thrush may include vaginal dryness with itching, a thick white vaginal discharge and pain on urinating. Treating Thrush in pregnancy reduces the chance of the baby developing oral thrush during childbirth.

Tips:

•             Eating yoghurt which contains acidophilus, and fresh garlic helps correct the balance of good bacteria.

•             Wear cotton pants and avoid wearing tight pants or pants made of fabric that aren’t breathable.

•             Eat a balanced diet eliminating acidic or sugary foods.

•             Sleep and rest well and reduce stress.

•             Use Homeopathic Calendula soap to wash your genital area.

•             Always wipe from front to back after going to the bathroom.

•             Avoid vaginal sprays and bubble baths.

•             Always wash and dry your swimsuit after use.

•             Add ten drops of tea tree oil to your bath water, this will help ease symptoms.

•             Do not use vaginal douches during pregnancy and sexual penetration during treatment for thrush.

Homeopathic remedies: Alternate Borax 30C and Candida 30C every three hours for three days.

Varicose Veins: During pregnancy, the increase in blood volume puts pressure on the veins, and hormonal secretions relax the walls of the blood vessels, making it difficult for blood to return from the lower body back up to the heart. The weight of the enlarging uterus can put additional stress on the pelvic veins and constipation may also obstruct pelvic circulation. As a result, blood may pool in the lower body and varicose veins may appear on the legs, anus or in the vulva. Those that appear in the rectum are commonly known as hemorrhoids or piles. Hemorrhoids can also occur following the birth of your baby due to the straining which occurs during labour or due to constipation.

Tips:

•             Avoid standing for too long and keep your feet elevated.

•             Massage may help in prevention of varicose veins but if you have already developed them, do not massage.

•             Eat plenty of dietary fiber, raw garlic, onions and parsley to increase elasticity of veins and avoid constipation. Vitamin-C-rich foods will promote healing and strengthen blood vessels, and raw beetroot either grated or juice, will strengthen the liver and aid elimination.

•             Exercise regularly to encourage the smooth functioning of the circulatory and eliminatory systems.

•             Taking a cold shower and directing the water up between the legs may help to relieve varicose veins.

Homeopathic remedies: For hemorrhoids or painful varicose veins, take Hamamelis 12C three times daily for up to a week followed by Calcarea fluorica 12X three times daily for 2 weeks is good for building up elastic tissues and preventing recurrence. For external application, use one tablespoon of arnica tincture diluted in a liter of cold water. Apply twice daily to affected areas, using a saturated washcloth.

Water Retention: An increase in the amount of tissue fluid can result in water retention, causing swelling or edema in the feet, face and hands. Fluid can pool in the ankles from standing for long periods of time particularly in hot weather. If you have high blood pressure, this can force fluid from the bloodstream into the tissues, resulting in oedema. Pregnancy hormones can also cause retention of sodium by your kidneys, which then causes the body to retain fluid.

Tips:

•             Avoid standing for long periods of time.

•             Rest and relax.

•             Avoid salty foods.

•             Keep your feet elevated whenever possible.

•             Eat a healthy balanced diet and drink plenty of fluids.

Homeopathic remedies: Natrum muriaticum 6X three times daily for up to a week until symptoms improve.

During Labor: Homeopathy is a safe means and can be exceptionally helpful during labor and delivery. The Homeopathic medicines help in diminishing pain and discomfort of pregnancy greatly lessening the need for analgesics and anesthesia, it also helps prepare the cervix for the process of labor by facilitating, softening, thinning out, and dilating the cervix prior to onset of labor.. A properly indicated Homeopathic medicine can also turn a breech baby and change a high risk pregnancy into a normal one. Even if you need a Caesarean section Homeopathy can be an important part of a speedy recovery after surgery.

Homeopathic remedies:

•             Aconite is an excellent medicine for trauma, shock, bleeding and exhaustion during labor.

•             Arnica can ease the bruising and swelling experienced post delivery.

•             Belladonna is indicated when the woman experiences extreme nervousness and agitation, general flushing of the face with hot skin during labor.

•             Bellis Perrenis is an excellent remedy for healing of torn perineum during delivery.

•             A few drops of Calendula tincture added to bath water is very effective in soothing vaginal pain after birth.

•             Caulophyllum eases uterine muscles helping induce labor when labor is progressing slowly, if the cervix is spasmodically rigid, undilated with feeble and irregular contractions.

•             Cimicifuga is indicated in late labor with intolerable cramps in the hips or pelvic pain from one side to the other making the woman hysterical.

•             Hypericum can help with headaches, back and neck pains following an epidural.

•             Pulsatilla can speed up the birth of an overdue baby, or turn the position of the baby eg. Breech baby.

•             Staphysagria is given post operative if an episiotomy or caesarean is performed. Women who take Staphysagria will not request pain killers after labor.

•             Sulphur works well after a long or difficult labor. It can effectively prevent bladder infections caused post pregnancy due to stretching and tearing of the tissues around the bladder, perianal area, and vulva.

•             Belladonna, Chamomilla and Cinchona are excellent remedies that help with post partum hemorrhage.

The above mentioned remedies are just a few of the commonly used Homeopathic remedies and are mentioned only to create awareness about the effectiveness of Homeopathic medicines in Pregnancy. It is not advisable to resort to self-medication for any disease.

Homeopathic medicines being gentle, safe, non-toxic, FDA approved are effective in treating various problems of pregnancy and childbirth. The medicines will improve the health of the mother as well as the fetus. Correct Homeopathic prescribing during pregnancy increases the likelihood of a healthy mom and a healthy child. Since Homeopathy works with the body’s natural defense system the Homeopathic medicines will strengthen the overall health functioning of the woman during and after pregnancy. Hence, for a safe, natural and effective answer for Pregnancy and childbirth consider Homeopathy.

Homeopaths joke that pregnancy is an excellent time to receive homeopathic care since two people (the mother and the baby) get a remedy for the price of one! But jokes aside, homeopathic treatment means the mother is more resilient and the child gets a healthier start.

Homeopathy vs. Drugs During Pregnancy

The medical profession has diverted the once joyous process of pregnancy and giving birth into a panicked, stressful medical emergency. Due to the high number of lawsuits resulting from medical negligence, doctors are now over-prescribing. Great for the doctors, but this new attitude has now brought to light increasing concern over the use of drugs during pregnancy which the foetus receives too; so, it’s better to be in the best of health so as not to need these drugs in the first place. Research has shown that drugs during labour and delivery can have short, as well as long-term effects on infants. (Korte and Scaer,1984.) Homeopathy before and during pregnancy can help to ensure a drug-free pregnancy and labor.
Let us explore some areas where homeopathy can aid during pregnancy, childbirth and after delivery.

1. Morning Sickness
2. Breech Birth
3. Labour
4. Retained Placenta
5. Post-partem Haemorrhage
6. Asphyxia of Newborn
7. Perineal Tears and Episiotomies
8. Post Natal Depression

Let us explore each of these areas, one by one.
Morning Sickness & Homeopathic Medicines
There’s no need to suffer from morning sickness thanks to homeopathy. The most common remedies for this are Sepia and Colchicum. See their descriptions in the list below along with the other morning sickness remedies. Keep in mind that you may not have all the symptoms that go with a particular remedy; just take the one that matches the best or comes the closest. Use a 30C potency, take one dose (1-5 pellets) and wait. The right remedy should have some effect within half an hour. If so, put the remedy in water and stir vigorously before each additional sip, which you should take only if there is a relapse or a failure to make progress on the single dose:

Anacardium — Nausea is relieved by eating.
Antimonium Crud. — Tongue thickly coated white. Better lying down, better warm baths, worse from being looked at.
Cocculus — Worse from motion, such as riding in a car; chilly, worse from open air; worse from loss of sleep; excessive salivation and much thirst for cold drinks.
Colchicum — Cannot bear the smell or even thought of food! Worse from riding in a car. Worse from standing up or lying flat. Better flexing knees or bending forward.
Ipecac — Continuous nausea not relieved by vomiting. Drooling. Tongue is clear/not coated. Thirstless. Desires open air, worse warmth, worse motion.
Nux Vomica — Nausea in the morning, in bed. Vomiting after eating. Disposition is irritable, angry. Constipation. Wakes at 3 AM., cannot get back to sleep. Chilly.

Pulsatilla — Desires company and sympathy. Weeping, feeling sorry for herself; craves fresh air, wants the window open; thirstless; aversion to warm food; tongue coated white or yellow.

Sepia — Empty feeling in stomach, not relieved by eating. Aversion to thought or odor of food. Desires tart food like pickles, vinegar, etc.; also desires chocolate. May complain that things taste salty. Irritable around people but does not want to be alone. Better from exercise, warmth, and sleep.

Symphoricarpus — Deathly nausea. Continuous retching and vomiting. Better lying on back, worse motion. Constipated.

Veratrum alb. — Vomiting with diarrhea. Freezing cold with cold sweat. Craves cold drinks with ice. Weak. Worse from exertion.

Tabacum — Deathly nausea, sinking feeling, cold and clammy, chills. Worse from any motion such as riding in a car. Much cold sweat. Pale. Tendency to spit. Worse heat, better fresh air.
As general measure to limit the severity of Morning Sickness, it is suggested that the pregnant woman should get up from the bed only after munching a biscuit or two. A high calorie diet and sweets are also known to reduce Morning Sickness. Hunger can also induce like symptoms in pregnancy, so long periods without food should be avoided.)

Breech Birth & Kate Chatfield Classical Homeopathy London
The most common and preferred position for the birth of a baby is head first. A breech position is when the baby is positioned in the womb to be born feet or buttocks first. A breech birth is frequently delivered by caesarean. Before 36 weeks it is sometimes possible to turn the baby into the preferred position (Locke,1991). Pulsatilla and Natrum Muriaticum are two remedies that can help turn the baby around in the womb.

Pulsatilla is a common remedy for this. A treatment of giving multiple doses of Pulsatilla 30c once a day (no more than 6 doses) or a 200c only once will often turn the baby. The woman, if needing Pulsatilla, may also show evidence of the common Pulsatilla mentals–desire for sympathy and company and a craving for fresh air; also, a tendency toward weeping and crying openly. The remedy Pulsatilla stimulates the muscles of the womb (Schmukler, 2003).

Natrum Muriaticum has also been indicated as a good remedy to move the foetus out of the breech position and is best indicated when the mother is feeling like she wants to be alone and is worse for company. They are emotional, but want to cry alone. The Natrum Muriaticum picture is the opposite of Pulsatilla in terms of temperment (Schmukler, 2003). Although having indicated these remedies, the best medicine is usually the one indicated by your local homeopath. These are based on the uniqueness of each woman’s symptoms and should always be the preferred treatment.
Managing Labour with Homeopathic Medicines
During labour a women can be treated acutely. Acute prescribing is also of benefit to the baby, such as a dose of Arnica 200c after the birth for both mother and baby which will ease the trauma/bruising endured during the labour.
Early Labour
Early labour is when contractions may come and go and the labour is not fully established. Pulsatilla 200c may help labour start properly.
Established Labour

The First part of labour usually can last anywhere from 12 hours in a first pregnancy to 6 hours for a second pregnancy, but no hard and fast rules apply. Uniquely, a woman can be in the first stage for as little time as a few minutes or as long as 36 hours–just ask my mother! Homeopathic remedies at this stage can be used to help any natural hold-ups ensuring the process progresses naturally without the use of allopathic drugs. One remedy is Caulophyllum. This is given to induce labour or used once when the progress is definitely underway as it strengthens contractions. Symptoms that indicate Caulophyllum include an excitability, restlessness and nervousness, a woman who trembles internally from weaknesses, is chilly and better for warmth. She will have erratic pains flying about from place to place, a lack of tone of the uterus and labour pains that are irregular. The woman may experience stiffness in smaller joints like the fingers. The mother to be will be exhausted and fretful and will desire company but will not be talkative. Spasmodic and severe pains which fly in all directions. Labour pains that are weak and irregular. (Murphy, 2000).
Second Stage of Labour
The second stage of labour usually lasts an hour or so in first pregnancies and about half an hour the second pregnancy. This stage of contractions become stronger and women may experience excessive pain. Chamomilla will help with painful contractions. The woman will be irritable, cross and abusive; she will demand things and then push them away. She will say things like, “I can’t take this anymore!” This is the picture of the women that is ready to kill the partner for her pregnancy. The pain maybe felt as a numbness feeling with the labour pains pushing upwards. A Chamomilla person is thirsty and may have one cheek red and the other pale.
The Belladonna pain is described as hot and throbbing with labour pains bearing downwards. Belladonna people are thirstless with both cheeks red. A Belladonna person may be delirious and might hit and bite.
Sepia is also worth considering when we are talking about unbearable labour pains. Sepia’s pain is described as dull and extends down into the thighs with a bearing down pain and the body will be flushed with heat. She will be chilly and want to be covered. Sepia will be irritated by company but doesn’t want to be alone. She will be worse from consolation, depressed with weeping episodes and then turn and be sarcastic. A Sepia woman will be aggravated by the thoughts or odor of food.
Other remedies for pain: Coffea, Aconite, Nux Vomica, Ignatia, Arsenicum, Kali Carbonicum, and Pulsatilla. A dose of Arnica prior to the birthing and immediately afterwards can prevent many delivery problems. The patient needing Arnica will feel bruised but will say she’s “okay” and have a fear of being touched.
Third Stage of Labour
Once the baby is born, the third stage proceeds and a dose of Aconite to the mother and the baby will help if fear is predominant. This can also be given for the next few days if needed. The final stage takes another 30 minutes or sometimes longer and is marked by an increase in bleeding as the placenta is delivered. Nursing the baby helps detachment of the placenta naturally.
Retained Placenta & Homeopathic Medicines
Commonly these days in the maternity hospitals an allopathic drug Syntometrine (derived from Secale also used as a homeopathic remedy) is given. But the use of the natural remedies to aid contraction of the womb and expulsion of the placenta might prevent the need of Syntometrine. To assist the body in expelling the placenta, Pulsatilla, Cantharis and Sepia should be considered.
The Pulsatilla person craves fresh air and wants windows opened. She is gentle and yielding and better for sympathy; dry mouth but without thirst.
The Cantharis patient has painful, burning urination. She will have a constant desire to urinate but will only pass minute amounts. She will be anxious, restless and angry.
The Sepia patient will have the sensation that the uterus is falling out–a bearing-down sensation. She wants to be covered, will want to be alone but afraid to be alone. If the placenta has not detached after an hour it will have to be removed by hand and this is done under a general anaesthetic.
Post-Partem Haemorrhage & Homeopathic Remedies
Massaging or pulling on the umbilical cord after the birth of the child can cause stress on the detachment process and can result in partial separation of the placenta which can result in post-partem haemorrhage. Cinchona (also known as China) is a good remedy for any loss of fluid/blood and can help to sustain the body.
Some other significant remedies that can help with post-partem haemorrhaging are:
Belladonna–flushed cheeks with the neck arteries throbbing, dilated pupils, bright red blood with clots which stops and starts suddenly. She will have a bearing-down feeling and think that her insides are going to fall out. Noise and light will irritate.
The look of fear that she is going to die signals the need for Aconite. She will be restless and have bright red blood that spurts out. Her face will be hot and dry. Aconite also has a great thirst.
Chamomilla –very uncivil and angry. She will describe the pain as unbearable and she is very sensitive to pain. She will have cold hands and feet. The haemorrhaging will be dark.
Ipecacuanha will be chilly and have a pale face with cold sweat. The blood will be bright red and the woman will feel nauseous. The pain will be from the umbilicus to the uterus.
Pains running from the back through to the front signal a need for Sabina. The blood is bright red and gushing but the consistency will be thin with dark clots. Sabina is worse from warmth.

The red face of Belladonna is likened to Ferrum Metallicum but unlike Belladonna, Ferrum Metallicum can’t bare the slightest noise and is worse at midnight. The blood will be dark and coagulated. She will have cold hands and feet. (Schmukler, 2003)
Asphyxia of the Newborn & Homeopathic Medicines
When the baby is delivered, the lungs need to convert from inhaling fluid to air and babies that fail to breath are commonly premature, overdue or babies whose mothers had pethidine during the labour. Commonly meconium or mucous can obstruct the airways. Human intervention of gentle suction to the nose, mouth and throat can extract meconium or mucous. This can help along with the following remedies:
Antimonium Tartaricum is the first remedy to consider. The baby will have a rattling sound and be pale. The lungs are filled with thick mucous.
Camphora can be used if Antimonium Tartaricum has failed. Use Camphora for meconium in the lungs. The baby is freezing cold, blue and limp. The pulse is small and weak.

Opium is indicated for coma or asphyxia especially after fright, the baby is unresponsive. The mother may have been frightened.
Carbo Veg is for when the baby is limp, near death, blue and needs oxygen to restore the body’s vital force.
Arnica is to be used when there has been a traumatic birth resulting in any head bruising or trauma. There is a weakness in reflexes.
The Lauroceraus baby will be cold, blue but gasping for breath with a failing pulse.
Perineal Tears, Episiotomies & Homeopathic Medicines
Perineal massage for the duration of the pregnancy and kegel exercises can minimise the need for episiotomies. In the event of a tear, cloth-wrapped ice packs soaked with a solution of Calendula in the first 24 hours will prevent infection and promote healing. Other remedies to speed healing are: Arnica, Staphisagria, and Hypericum. Take Arnica if the mother feels bruised and worse from touch. She will feel that the bed or chair is too hard. Arnica will help control bleeding, swelling and prevent infections.

Staphisagria might be well suited when an episiotomy has been performed. The clean, razor cut wounds suits the action of Staphisagria and taking this remedy will speed healing and tissue restoration.
Hypericum is best for when there is a lot of pain that radiates from the tear or cut.
Post Delivery Considerations
The weeks and even months after the birth of a baby the body initiates its own healing. Symptoms like after pains in the uterus during breast feeding are all part of the body returning to its natural state. Many women feel a bit down after the pregnancy due to the re-balancing of hormones, blood sugar levels and the general tiredness of their new duties.

Post Natal Depression & Homeopathic Medicines

Post natal depression effects one is every ten women and homeopathy can help a mother to cope while things are settling down into a routine. Post natal depression is expressed by weeping, feeling hopeless, inadequate and anxious about the new pressure of motherhood. She may not be able to sleep and might have little interest in daily activities. It is important to match the mother’s symptoms to a remedy; consider: Sepia, Natrum Muriaticum, Pulsatilla, and Platina.
Sepia suits depression due to hormonal imbalances. The Sepia mother may reject the baby, may not want to nurse. For one thing, she is exhausted. The Sepia woman is chilly and worse in cold air. She is emotional and unable to express her deep feelings. For the Sepia person, physical exercise/dancing will make her feel better. She may seem joyless, tearful, critical and even grumpy and snappish. She will want to be alone and is worse from consolation. Sepia craves chocolate, lemons, pickles and cold drinks.

Natrum Muriaticum is emotional, introverted and solitary. She will seem remorseful rather than depressed. She will weep when alone and feel worse from heat and sunlight. She has trouble communicating feelings and won’t ask for help. She craves salt.
